Children’s Book Illustrations by Brian Pinkney
GREENWICH ACADEMY "I make pictures for the child in me. My work is actually my way of playing.
That's why I think children enjoy my books; they recognize me as one of their own," noted artist
Brian Pinkney. Pinkney, who spoke about his inspirations as an author and illustrator to Greenwich
Academy Lower School students on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, is the featured artist in the
Luchsinger Gallery and the Jacobs Lobby of the Wallace Performing Arts Center . Twentyof Pinkney's
scratch board and oil pieces will be on display through March 7, 2008.
Brian Pinkney has illustrated numerous books for children, including two Caldecott Honor Books,
The Faithful Friend by Robert D. San Souci and Duke Ellington by Andrea Davis Pinkney. Mr. Pinkney's
own books include Cosmo and the Robot, Max Found Two Sticks, JoJo's Flying Side Kick and The
Adventures of Sparrowboy, winner of the 1997 Boston Globe/Horn Book Award. Pinkney has been awarded
the Coretta Scott King Honor for illustration three times and the Coretta Scott King Award once for
In the Time of the Drums by Kim Siegelson.
Pinkney earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in art. His work has been shown in art
galleries and his illustrations appeared in several magazines. But he's best known for his children's
book illustrations and the books he has authored and illustrated.
