GREENWICH ACADEMY— Each spring, during Reunion Weekend at Greenwich Academy, an alumna is invited to display her work in the Luchsinger Gallery in the Wallace Performing Arts Center. In celebration of her fiftieth reunion, professional photographer Judy Howse Onthank, from the Class of 1955, will be the featured alumnae artist. The exhibit entitled The Uncommon Journey is a collection of fifty photographs taken in India and Asia, including the countries of Bhutan, Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia. The exhibit will run through May 27, 2005. During this photography show, 16 embroidered collages by artist and retiring Academy faculty member Carol Dixon can be previewed in the Jacobs Lobby. A one-woman show of Mrs. Dixon's works will begin May 28, 2005, in the Luchsinger Gallery. A reception for both artists will be held on Friday, May, 13, 2005, from 5 to 7 PM, in the gallery.

After a career of teaching dance to young children and then a career of writing, producing and directing award-winning documentaries, including A Place in the Heart, a video celebrating the 350th anniversary of Greenwich's founding, Judy Onthank began to pursue her other passions -- photography and travel. Since 1998, she has become a professional photographer, traveling to Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and Cuba with professional photography groups and the National Geographic Society. She shoots, edits, processes and prints all of her photographs.

About her craft.she says:"The technical part of photography is a huge challenge, and it has taken me five years to be comfortable with both the camera and the computer. A huge step for me was switching to a digital SLR camera. I then needed to immerse myself in learning to use the computer. I only use minor enchantments -- just as you would use the darkroom in the past, but now it is a 'digital darkroom.'"

She physically trains for the strenuous shoots -- hiking, climbing, kneeling and bending, while carrying heavy equipment. "I seldom use a long lens, which forces me to be 'up close and personal' and to develop a rapport with the subject. I strive to tell a story, show motion, emotion and mystery with my photographs. Through my photographs I want to share the uniqueness of each culture."

Judy Onthank has studied at the International Center of Photography in New York City, Santa Fe Workshops and travel workshops with internationally acclaimed photographers Lisl Dennis, Nevada Wier and Phil Borges. Last May, she exhibited at People's Bank in Greenwich, a show sponsored by the Greenwich Arts Council.
