What exactly lies ahead for GA this season? Sports Director Angela
Tammaro shares her main goals for the spring. “We would like
the girls to steadily improve and play their best in all the games
that they have, with the hope that they will qualify for their tournaments.”
Here’s what to expect this spring in GA sports:
The Sailing
team is looking forward to a promising season, with their biggest
events, including the qualifying rounds for New England’s
and Fairfield Women’s Championship, in May. While previously
the only co-ed team, Coach Susan Bonney thinks this an asset. “We
compete separately, but practice with the guys out of both necessity
and convenience. The Wick boys bring a lot of talent onto the water,
and our sailors are only as good as our competition.”
Softball’s major
rivals this season are KLHT and St. Luke’s School. Coach Doug
DeRosa believes that captains Kirby Bumpus, Steele Hearne and Merrell
Hambleton will lead the team into a successful spring. “The
captains are very good players and are well respected by the other
members of the team. I am very confident that they will do an outstanding
job in providing leadership to the softball team.” The pitchers
have worked over the winter with a pitching coach, Elizabeth Swank.
Varsity Lacrosse,
under the leadership of Caroline Simmons and Cara Sweeney, is looking
forward to its FAA tournament at the end of the season. Coach Tammaro
expressed, her excitement for the spring. “Everyone is full
of anticipation for a good season. There are a lot of girls playing
lacrosse so the enthusiasm is high and the expectation for a good
season is there.”
Crew, led by captains
Elizabeth Losch and Mariell Kiernan, is expecting a challenging
but successful season. “We have a strong group of girls coming
back from winter workouts as well as a large group of enthusiastic
novices, which is the perfect combination for a really fun and successful
spring,” said Liz. The season will end with the Stotesbury
Regatta, which Liz believes will be the most important, along with
the New England Championships. “Last year we placed extremely
well at the Stotesbury in multiple events, and I have every confidence
that we’ll do even better there this season.”
