Q: Why
do you love sailing?
A: "Sailing
is something that I have been doing for my whole life. While lots
of things in my life have changed, sailing has been the one thing
that I have been able to hold on to. Also, the friends that I
have made in sailing are my closest friends and also are the ones
who have remained with me through the years."
Q: How
did GA prepare you for college athletics?
A: "I find
the challenging academics at GA prepared me best for college athletics.
Sailing takes up every afternoon and both days on the weekends,
making managing my schedule to include schoolwork often very difficult.
My experience at GA was very influential in my being able to be
successful in both sailing and academics at Brown."
Q:
Did you have any mentors at GA that inspired you?
A: "I was
influenced by many great people during my years at Greenwich Academy.
Perhaps the person who most inspired me was Captain Benjamin,
who actually taught English at Brunswick. He opened up whole new
worlds to me with his interpretations of famous pieces of literature
that we looked at in class. Outside of class, however, I really
admired his role as a Captain in the Army and never tired of hearing
stories about his travels and service. I admire his choice to
teach English simply because when he is teaching, I can tell how
much he loves what he is doing; it really shows in his enthusiasm
in the classroom. I also admire his courage as he fights the war
in Iraq and have even managed to stay in touch with him."
Q:
What do you miss the most about sports at GA?
A: "One of
the things I miss most about sailing at GA was the great equipment
we had. We sailed with brand new boats and sails and always had
great coaches."
Q:
How does sailing in college differ from sailing at GA?
A: "The level
of sailing is much higher than anything I experienced at GA. We
sail against people from a much larger geographic area on a weekly
basis and practice nearly twice as much. The team also is much
closer; we not only sail together every day, but we party together
in the evenings and on weekends."
Q:
What do you think you want to do after college?
A: "After
college I would love to continue sailing. I am not yet sure what
sort of path I will take to continue participating in the sport,
but it has been such a huge part of my life that I don't think
I can leave it behind."
