Ashley Lyddane GA'02
Q: Why do you love field hockey?
A: I love field hockey because I have so much fun playing and competing with my teams. It is a challenging sport that requires skill, speed and a game sense in order to be successful. If you only have one of the three, you probably won't be a good field hockey player. In a sport like lacrosse, you need to be able to run and throw, and if you are athletic, you can just pick up the sport and be successful. However, in a sport like field hockey, there is a lot more skill required, and it involves a lot of time and practice to advance in the sport, which, in my experience, has made it more rewarding.
Q: How did GA prepare you for college athletics?
A: GA prepared me for college athletics very well. I learned the proper work ethic that is required for practice and training. Ms. T was great coach because she didn't really do anything fancy in order to make us better players. She stressed the basics because if you can't do the basics in field hockey, you will not be successful. Once you can stop, dribble, hit and pass the ball successfully, you can advance in other areas. By practicing the basics, you concentrate on becoming better and better, and then you can add other skills like beating a player one on one, shooting and offensive and defensive corners. By preparing us adequately with the basics of the game, Ms. T helped us as players to advance in our skill level exponentially.
Q: Did you have any mentors at GA that inspired you?
A: I was lucky to have great coaches and mentors all the way through Middle School and Upper School. I also was really lucky because I witnessed great leadership in my teammates in my sophomore and junior years on varsity. The older girls on my team taught me how to be a better leader and player. They had carried on the tradition of GA field hockey from the girls before them, and they passed it onto me. I am really grateful for their generosity and spirit, and I hope that I was able to impact the girls in the classes below me in a similar manner.
Q: What do you miss the most about sports at GA?
A: I miss sports at GA because of the deep tradition that is tied with all the teams, especially field hockey. I also miss my former teammates; however, I've been very lucky because I've never been on a team where I didn't just love and value all my teammates. I was so happy when I came to Middlebury College to find that all my teammates had the same character that my teammates at GA did. I was a little concerned about what it would be like to play with people whom I really did not know versus playing with my classmates and girls I had known through my 13 years at GA. I also miss my coaches, and I have to admit that some of Ms. T's "doctrines" (I can't think of a better word) have stuck with me and replay in my head from time to time.
Q: How does playing at Middlebury differ from playing at GA?
A: Playing at Middlebury is very different from playing at GA. First of all, I didn't get to play on GA's turf so I played on the grass. When I got to Middlebury, I had to adjust to the astro turf that they have, which makes it a faster, more exciting game. We also play a European style of play at Middlebury, and we really stress spreading the field as wide as we can to create space for a quick passing game. We also are very offensive in that we play with only three defenders at most; occasionally we will play with only two in the back, which means that the rest of the team is on offense most of the time, making our games very offensive for the most part. If our competition is equal to us or better than us, we have to adjust to that obviously, but for the most part, we are an offensive-minded team, which I personally enjoy very much. The style of our play is a lot of fun. It is fast paced, making it really exciting to play and exciting for my parents to watch.
Q: What do you think you want to do after college?
A: Right now, because I'm still trying to figure out what classes to take this semester, I'm not really thinking about graduation --let alone what I'll be doing after graduation. I'm in denial that I am actually graduating so I'm trying not to think about leaving Middlebury just yet. One of my best friends here and I come up with a new plan every day about what we will be doing; a month ago it was professional field hockey in Spain, and today we actually talked about moving to Colorado. In the back of my mind, eventually I would like to get a "real" job and join the corporate world. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is that I would want to do, but the one thing that I keep coming back to is real estate development, but we will see. But, then again, there is always field hockey in Spain--a tough call.
